A is for allergies in pets

Updated: Jul 26, 2024

Is your dog's incessant scratching keeping you up at night? Are they pawing at the muzzle and ears? Constantly licking their paws, and no matter how many times you tell them to stop nothing changes?

Allergies might be the culprit!

Lets see what we can do.

Recognizing Signs of Allergies:

Pets communicate differently than humans, but there are clear signs of allergies. Watch for excessive scratching, red or irritated skin, sneezing, watery eyes, and changes in behavior. If your pet displays these symptoms, it's time to investigate further, and see what is causing it.

Types of Pet Allergies:

Just like us, pets can suffer from various allergies. Common types include food allergies, environmental allergies (pollen, dust mites), and contact allergies (irritation from certain materials).

The most common food allergies we see today includes maize and chicken followed by all grain.

Contact allergies will show up wherever they come in contact with your pet, be it a specific ingredient in your dog shampoo or a tick and flea treatment, or even cleaning agents used around the house and garden.

Environmental allergies often come and go, and can often have a seasonal trigger, like pollen that shows up more in spring and summer months, and will go away during the autumn winter months.

If none of these are the culprit you may be dealing with over all skin allergies, making them more sensitive to any type of irritant, and often does not go away, but will have flareups where symptoms get worse.

Identifying the specific allergen is crucial for effective treatment.

Identifying Allergy Triggers:

Pinpointing the cause of your pet's allergies requires patience and observation. Keep a diary of your pet's activities, surroundings, and diet. Take note of where they are scratching or licking the most. This can give you a lot of insight to what is going on.

If you suspect a certain trigger, try to eliminate the source and see if you notice a difference over time. After a few weeks try to reintroduce the source and take note of their reaction.

Do the same with the next suspected trigger. Please be patient in this stage, I know it can be frustrating and time consuming but it will be all worth it.

Consult your vet, who may recommend elimination diets, skin tests, or blood tests to identify the allergen.

Allergy Remedies at Your Fingertips:

Once you have a better idea of what is causing your pet to scratch it is time to invest in the remedies that will work for you dog, and your budget. Seasonal allergies will go away and come back, where other allergies will need year round treatment. There are a plethora of remedies available to alleviate allergies. From hypoallergenic diets to specialized shampoos, these products are designed to address specific allergies. Regular grooming and cleaning can also reduce exposure to potential allergens.

Treatments will usually follow the contact path, if the allergen is ingested, treatment will also follow the oral root, if it is external treatment will most likely be topical. Often times treatment includes both especially in the beginning until the allergy is under control and will then move on to maintenance treatments. Knowing what the cause and the severity of the allergy is will greatly affect the treatment program, and a once-size-fits-all approach does not always work. At home diagnosis and treatment will be trail and error until you find what works for you.
